What's your favorite thing about Monday?
My favorite thing about this Monday is the one of my new go to cocktails; Corpse Reviver #2.
Lore says it is named as such due to its abilities to help one recover from a hangover. While I've never tried it as a hair of the dog remedy I will attest to it's ability to cause a hangover.
When I first made this for friends over the holidays I was a little apprehensive; my now almost empty bottle of Lillet was heretofore untested and I was unsure what to expect. The results were favorable all around, a light citrus flavored drink with just a hint of anise flavor in the background.
Pour all ingredients in to a cocktail shaker with ice, shake vigorously (you are waking the flavors up, not lulling them to sleep), strain and garnish with a strip of lemon peel.1oz. Lillet Blanc
1oz dry gin
1oz Cointreau (or triple sec if you're out of Cointreau like I am)
1oz lemon juice
Several drops of Absinthe*
*Different versions of this recipe call for different amounts of Absinthe; I've found several drops to be just the right amount. If Absinthe isn't handy I would assume that Pastis or Herbsaint will do.
Which 5 words would your best friend use to describe you?
Submitted by Ross.
I thought I'd take a different approach to today's QotD.
First I jotted down a list of words that I thought other people would use to describe me, "Potential Words Fish Thinks His Friends Will Use To Describe Him"
Then I thought about the QotD and actually answered it, "The Five Fish Thinks His Friends Will Use".
But then I wanted to go a step further and actually ask my BFFs and see if there was any overlap.
I asked RRX, JCN and my special lady friend ALW to provide responses for this QotD.
For the sake of fairness I also asked a person with whom I am not longer on BFF status with to provide responses (TMD).
For convenience I loaded everything into a spreadsheet and published it below.
I numbered all the responses in an effort to make the crazy chart that follows more readable.
*JCN did not provide the word "Rememberful" but did say I was great at remembering things and as I could not find a word to describe that I chose "Rememberful" which according to The Urban Dictionary is the opposite of "Forgetful".
Looking over the data I picked out these words as the most popular
among my BFF's. Notice that I combined a few words that I feel are
synonyms; whether or not they are is a matter of personal taste I
suppose.
- Independent
- Stubborn/Difficult
- Nerdy
- Eclectic/Diverse
- Bumptious/Instigative
By my count we have a three way tie for most popular word: Independent, Stubborn/Difficult and Nerdy
Rounding out the list with two votes each are Eclectic/Diverse and Bumptious/Instigative.
And those are the words my BFF's would choose to describe me.
While collecting all this data I decided I wanted to put it all in a graph to visualize it. The graph below is a six set Edwards Venn Diagram; I don't think I'm using it right. In fact I'm almost certain that I'm not but it looks so pretty I just had to publish it.
The election is a week from today, who are you going to vote for?
That's right. I did it.
I've tried to write a few posts about why I
support Nader and why you should too but every time I start it's like
my hands take over and vitriolic hatred comes spewing from my keyboard
and what started off as a nice post ends up looking like someone with
turrets took over my blog. It's why I don't often discuss politics.
I
voted for him in '04 but not because I followed him; I voted for him
because Kerry was going to win California anyway and I wanted to
support a third party because I think the current "two party" system is
a joke.
Growing up I remember my father telling me that Nader was a crazy
person and I more or less held onto that belief until just
recently.
In
March or April of this year I watched a documentary called "Ralph
Nader: An Unreasonable Man" and came out of it realizing that it was my
moral imperative to vote for Ralph Nader for president.
I had known about "Unsafe at Any Speed" since childhood but I didn't know that Nader was key in making America and the world a better and safer place.
This is just a partial list of the things Ralph Nader is responsible for, things that have made all of our lives better:
The EPA
The Clean Air Act
The Consumer Protection Agency
OSHA
Freedom of Information Act
National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act
(Here is a more complete list.)
The man put seat-belts and airbags in cars; labels on food.
Now,
take a minute and look at your candidate and what they have
accomplished. What they have done for you, for America, for the world.
Pretty short list, isn't it?
I kept my support for Nader quite
until very recently and as soon as I let my support be known I was
mocked for it. I've repeatedly told that I'm throwing my vote away.
I
disagree.
Those voting within the system are throwing their vote away;
voting for a broken system that is no longer run by the people for the
people like our fore-fathers set fourth. It is now run by corporations
who all but write the laws that are passed by our corrupt politicians....
See, there was that hatred was starting to come out...
When are we going to actually vote our conscience?
Nearly everyone I speak to about this is willing to acknowledge that
Nader is a better candidate but is
unwilling to vote for him.
"He can't win. Why throw my vote away?" or "If it's between Obama and McCain I've got to go with Obama." And vice versa.
He can't win if you don't back him!
As long as we stay in this "least
worst" or "lesser of two evils" mindset how do we expect to see change
and progress?
I hear people saying, 'I wish there were more parties, more choices."
There are. There are there are over 20 people running for president of
these United States; four of which poll high enough to be considered
real candidates by most standards.
Chuck Baldwin - Constitution Party
Bob Barr - Libertarian Party
Cynthia McKinney - Green Party
Ralph Nader - Peace and Freedom Party
I'm not saying you should vote for Nader (actually I am; vote Nader!)
but you should vote for your candidate for the right reasons; not
because he is the least worst of two bad choices.
When do we finally say "enough" and do the right thing?
Do you bring or buy your lunch during the work week? How much money do you spend on food consumed during working hours?

One of the fringe benefits of my job is that we are provided lunch on a pretty regular basis.
Drug companies come in at least every other day and bring in lunch for
the whole office. They use it as a chance to talk to everyone about
their new drug or new trail or what ever it is they are doing. I just
ignore them and since I'm not a doctor or a nurse they mostly ignore me
too.
When I say they bring lunch I don't mean just sandwiches and pizza; I'm talking about full on meals.
Recently we've had:
- A Mexican feast; chicken, fish and beef tacos, rolled tacos, rice, beans, enchiladas and brownie cookies for dessert.
- Build your own baked potato bar with sour cream, chili, cheese, scallions, bacon, two kids of dressing (don't know what those were), salad and cheese cake bars for dessert.
- Six gourmet pizzas. I don't even know what was on all of them. There wasn't a regular one to be found, no peperoni, sausage or just cheese. I ended up eating some that was Mexican themed with carne asada and salsa on it.
- Breakfast with croissant sandwiches, bacon, eggs and cheese in them, chibatta sandwiches with the same, also with ham and eggs, a big thing of eggs and bunch of sausage and bacon, fresh fruit, granola and yogurt, OJ and Starbucks coffee.
- Two three foot sandwiches on some sort of artesian bread, all kinds of meat and veggies in them along, salad (there is a salad with almost every meal) and cannoli for dessert.
That's just what I can remember from the past two weeks. I know at some point recently we've had lasagna and pulled pork and beef sandwiches but I can't remember what else came with those meals.
The days that lunch isn't provided we usually eat leftovers from the day before.
There's also a six foot tall cabinet that is packed with sodas, every kind you could want or imagine. It gets restocked every day with whatever soda or water we don't drink at lunch.
There are two drawers in the kitchen filled with single serving plastic ware with napkins or salt and/or pepper inside.
One of the cabinets is full of paper plates and there is another full of paper bowls.
So to answer the original question(s): neither and none.
If you could, which film would you un-watch or which book would you un-read?

Easy, the only movie I can remember walking out on.
"Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay"
In comparison, here is a partial list of movies that I didn't walk out on.
"Super Mario Brothers" (Live action with Bob Hoskins Mario, John Leguizamo Luigi and Dennis Hopper as King Koopa.
Just look at the preview:
"Spice World". Twice. You know, the movie starring the Spice Girls. (I saw it once with my sister, then once with a girl I was seeing.)
Any number of Owen Wilson movies. That one where he's a downed pilot, the haunted house movie, those two with Jackie Chan and who could forget that steaming pile that was "Starsky & Hutch". Blech.
"Holy Man" with Eddie Murphy and Jeff Goldblum. It's a movie so bad the preview isn't even online for it.
And last but not least is everyone's favorite movie that tanked a multi-million dollar franchise: "Batman & Robin". The one with Clooney (not his fault) and Arnold (his fault, but not entirely).
These are the movies that I sat though but could not find it in myself to sit through "Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay".
ETA(Or what ever those initials are for 'I added more stuff later on'):
I forgot the absolute worst movie I have seen in a number of years before H&K. "Transformers". I know, some people like that movie but those people are wrong. Trust me. Feel me on this one. It is one of the worst movies made in the last 10 years. I sat through every excruciating moment of that movie, I wanted to leave but I paid $13 to see it in IMAX and damnit I was going to get my money's worth if it killed me.
Gah. Just thinking about it makes me upset.
Would you rather be rich or famous? Why?

What question do you hate being asked?
This is actually a question that I used to hate, but now it's a fun party trick.
"What do you do?"
It's really hard to explain "document management" to people who don't really ever think about that kind of stuff, everyone has documents but nobody every really thinks about what to do with them, how long to hold on to them, which ones are important...
I did.
Now when people ask me I say "I'm unemployed".
This is always fun for me because nearly every time I say this to a person they don't know how to react.
Suddenly the conversation turns from light to "oh, I'm sorry" while they look away and sometimes take a step back like I'm infected and they are afraid of catching the "unemployed" bug.
It's pretty cool.
What one year of your life would you like to re-live, if you were given the chance?

I'm not really answering this QotD; instead I'm showing off the awesomeness coming soon to a theater near me.

When was the last time you made a drastic change to your personal style (i.e., wardrobe, hairstyle, etc.)? What did you do?
Submitted by miyna.
Before I answer...I'm thinking of growing a mustache just for fun for a few weeks. Thoughts?
On to the QotD at hand....
The last time I made a drastic change was last autumn, winter and part of the spring. I didn't shave for nearly six months; I didn't even trim.
Really it's not much of a beard, it doesn't fill in properly but SCM likes it so I grow it every year.
